It has always been a gamble whenever producers would release new films since they wouldn’t exactly know how the audience would take it. Then again, it would be more of a challenge for a production to be able to release sequels after the success of the first films.
There are a lot of cases wherein it turned out to be such an awful decision to make a sequel, but there are times that they are considered to be just as good or even better than the first one. This is what is currently happening in the Hollywood box office charts at the moment.
The third installment of the animated film series Hotel Transylvania seems to be taking over the box office charts this month, which is said to be surprising as first two are considered to be mediocre by critics and weren’t exactly as popular compared to other animated films that were being released around at the same time. However, this time around, they are definitely dominating the box office.
Hotel Transylvania 3 Dominates The Box Office
The third installment of the ever loving group of monsters from Transylvania is back, they seem to be doing a great job so far. The Hotel Transylvania franchise started in 2012 and it was produced by Sony Pictures Animation. It features an ensemble cast consisting the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, and more.
The first two films of the franchise managed to hit the box office, but this third seems to be doing a better job so far after being released last weekend. As of yesterday, July 15th, the third installment of the franchise, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, now has over $100 million worldwide gross with only $80 million as a budget.
It opened the same time as The Rock’s Skyscraper, which is only grossed over $65 million worldwide with a budget of approximately $125 million. They both opened in 42 countries and the difference is definitely huge. Hotel Transylvania 3 definitely dominated the box office, especially in the United States.
With the inclusion of Amazon Prime showings, it got $44 million already, making it the biggest animated debut in all of the 42 countries it was released in. It is not even released in some other major countries yet such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, South Korea, and France.
So far it has managed to earn its $23 million from some countries in Latin America such as Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. Disney has also released another film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe around the same time as Skyscraper and Hotel Transylvania was released.
Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly close to hitting the box office charts, especially compared to the to the last Marvel film, The Avengers: Infinity War. This third installment of the said franchise will be in theaters for 3-4 weeks more, so they might definitely break even more records by earning hundreds of billions more not just within all the local screenings, but all over the world.
Animated Films Rule
The Hotel Transylvania franchise just proves that animated films are still dominating the box office charts. However, most people often wonder what is so good about animated films anyway.
Some analysts believe that animated films are just so appreciated by most people, not just within the United States but the entire world, is because it is just so versatile. Animated films are not just for kids, they are also for adults, this alone simply means that they are literally for everyone no matter how old they may be. Literally, the entire family could simply go to the cinemas and watch it all together.
This is one major reason why it always seems to dominate the box office charts. Kids want to see it and so the adults would need to accompany the kids to watch it in the cinemas. Its genre also seems to be flexible since it is definitely not just a theme that children would like, but the adults too.
Just like some Disney films that have some inspiring themes to go with it, such as the final Toy Story film, Frozen, Inside Out, and more. The filmmaking process of an animated film may also take a few years since it is all computer generated. Finally, it is just always nice to hear some celebrity voices on different animated characters.
