The California Mayor wants to stop employees from wearing ties and the reason is purely linked to health. The Los Angeles Times reported that the mayor of the Los Angeles R. Rex Parris is planning a policy which will put all the employers under pressure to stop requiring workers to wear ties.

The mayor himself worked as a public official for a decade has worn a tie but he said that there are health risks associated with the tie. Recently a blog post was published on Big Think which talked about a German study and according to that study neckties affect the flow of blood.

That blog post was the starting point for the mayor who read the post in detail. That study talked about two groups of people – one with button-closed shirts and wearing neckties and the other with open collars and open buttons. It was then reported that those wearing neckties has 7.5% less blood flow rate to the brain as compared to the other group of people. “Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) reduces with neckties”, the study concluded.

R. Rex Parris, the mayor of California has asked all the employers to stop requiring workers to wear the ties.

That study gave Parris a physical shock and then he asked officials to ban all the employers from requiring workers to wear a tie. While giving an interview, the mayor said that he often rides a bike to stimulate the blood flow to the brain and every morning when he wears a tie, it looks like all the good work he has done has diminished.

While addressing a city council meeting on Jul 10, the mayor said that decreased blood flow leads to the lack of creativity and effects the analytical thinking as well.  With regard to this, Parris has asked the local Criminal Justice Commission and the city attorney to check the feasibility of this ban and fine for those employers which will not comply with the ban.

Saying all this is easier to say than done. But there is a history about the mandatory ties as many complaints have been recorded against those. And one of those complaints includes 2015 New York City Commission demand. While giving an interview to the Times, Michael Colantuono, a legal expert said that setting a private business dress will solve all the clothing issues.

Parris said in a country like America it is not appropriate for the people to wear something that is harmful to the health. However, this is not the first time that a mayor is making the national headlines. Back in 2017, the Republican asked to boost LGBTQ saying that doing so will help in cutting down the crime rate.

According to a German study, those who wear neckties are more prone to suffer decrease blood flow to the brain.

While giving an interview to the Vice, Parris said that when you put a threshold for the Asian population, education level goes up and crime rates go down. And the same way he wanted to implement this clothing rule, he further added.

Back in 2012, the Republican made a lot of efforts to decrease the crime rates in Lancaster and for this, he asked to play birds chirping sound in the speakers when a violent activity takes place. There are a couple of health studies which are backing the ban proposed by Parris.

One study German study is already discussed and another 2003 study showed that wearing a too tight necktie can increase chances of glaucoma which then cause blindness. The study calculated the pressure of the eyeball while wearing a too tight necktie. The study then found that a consistent rise in the pressure has been linked to glaucoma.

The California Mayor said that the amount of money he has spent on the ties, he could easily buy a car with that. Back in 2016, a business casual policy was proposed by JP Morgan but a year after that the British Parliament dropped the tie from the dress code of males. According to the stats of the Society for Human Resource Management, in last 5 years, 10% more employers have allowed workers to wear casual dress. And now many of the US companies have allowed for a more relaxed wardrobe.
